The Ultimate Guide to Wedding Confetti
From a Wedding Photographer
6 tips, tricks and inspo ideas

Oh confetti. A topic which we speak to nearly every bride about. We receive a lot of questions such as “which type of confetti?” and “how much confetti?”. It always comes down to that balance between using it to celebrate you saying “I do” and also being enough to get those epic confetti shots. Check out our guide below of all the tips and tricks we have learnt over our past 13 years.
Why have confetti?
Because it is iconic and an experience we all need to have!!! We always recommend having confetti at your wedding as it sets a vibe for your whole day and allows the celebratory excitement at the end of the ceremony. It will also give you that “just married” feeling, creates AMAZING photos and sets a happy tone for events following the ceremony.
Your guests will LOVE it!
Guests love confetti… especially the kids! It allows everyone to feel involved, have their own little task and contribute their excitement when you walk back down the aisle. It also builds anticipation as the guests are knowing what to expect and are eager to throw their celebratory sprinkles on you haha.
Which confetti to choose?
There are a few options to choose from and it also depends on your venue. Some venues will only allow biodegradable confetti and for this we usually recommend The Whole Bride who is well known for their eco-friendly confetti and cones. They also let you know how many bags to get per number of guests. Another biodegradable option is to use a hole-puncher and stamp circles or shapes out of dried leaves or purchase rose petals. Pinterest is your best friend here as there are so many creative and DIY options!
How much confetti?
There is a balance between too much and not enough. As photographers, we need enough to be epic but not too much that we can’t see you haha. The rule of thumb is usually 1-2 handfuls per guest. However, don’t stress too much about this as we just work around how much you have chosen. Most confetti suppliers will also let you know how many bags and cones to purchase according to the number on your guest list.
Should I have extra?
It is is definitely up to you but we would say yes it if you would like to use it for other parts of the day. For instance, during photos with kids and family portraits, confetti is such a nice way for them to naturally be involved and to have fun! Especially for the very little ones. We also sometimes use extra confetti during the bridal party portraits… we have a few go-to poses for this!
Can i use bubbles?
We don’t recommend using bubbles due to a few reasons. Firstly, it can create an awkward atmosphere as guests are blowing bubbles instead of clapping and cheering. We find it makes for a silent “just married” moment which doesn’t seem as exciting haha. Also, if it is too windy we find that it doesn’t look as impressive.
In the end, its not about being perfect… its about the feeling it gives!
During the wedding planning process, it is really hard not to get too focused on making everything perfect. These recommendations are just extra tips but with over 900 weddings under our belt, no one has done it “wrong”. You just choose what you think and we roll with it. So, focus on using confetti to create that excited and happy vibe for the day and let your photographer and videographer organise the rest!
