A guide to a pet-friendly wedding day

Having your dog at your wedding… everything you need to know!

  • Why do it?
  • Doggy roles
  • Choosing a venue
  • Pet vendors?
  • Photography tips
  • Timing

I was booking in a wedding yesterday and the couple were asking us for tips on making their favourite little man (a puppy named Bruce) a main part of the ceremony. I suddenly thought that we should make a guide on this as we are asked about pet-friendly weddings all the time. We have captured more than 900 weddings since 2013 and quite a few of them made their doggies a main part of the ceremony. Did any of our couples regret it? Nope!! So, here is a quick guide on everything you need to do know about making your furry friend your VIP guest.

WHY DO IT?
Having your dog at your wedding just makes it feel more like your day. They have been there for the ordinary days and the big milestones, the cuddles and the hard times, so having them there when you say your vows feels natural and comfy. It turns your wedding from just a pretty day into something personal, because your day would not be complete without them. They are your family and one of your most favourite “people”.

CHOOSING A VENUE
This is a big one and something which would be ideal to check before signing any contracts. Choosing a venue that allows your dog is such an important part of the plan, because not every place is going to be as excited about them as you are. Outdoor venues are usually the easiest option since there is space for them to move around and it feels more relaxed, but always double check the rules and get it in writing. Ask where your dog is allowed to be, if there are any restricted areas, and what the clean up expectations are. The goal is to pick somewhere that feels welcoming and stress free so you are not worrying about logistics on the day and can just enjoy having your whole little family there. In our experience, most venues are extremely accomodating. We have had doggies at heaps of big venues including Coolibah Downs, Summergrove Estate, The Earth House and Osteria. It is definitely worth asking!

ROLES
One of the sweetest parts about including your dog is deciding what little role they get to play on the day. They could walk down the aisle as your ring bearer with a cute collar, be a “flower dog”, sit at your feet during the ceremony, or simply join you for portraits and then head home when and if they become overwhelmed. Some of our couples loved the idea of their dog being front and centre, while others chose a more quieter moment like a first look together before guests arrive. There is no right way to do it, it just comes down to your dog’s personality and what will feel relaxed and natural for everyone. Plus, what is less stress for you.

VENDORS
Some of our past couples hired pet babysitters to help with the day and to keep your loved one happy and entertained. We recommend Pet Wedding Assistants and have worked with them many times. If you don’t want to hire someone, just have a designated friend or family member to watch them and be the holder of the treats and toys. This person can be on the lookout on how your dog is feeling and can decide when to take them for a walk or to help them relax.

PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS
When it comes to photos, the best tip is to keep it relaxed and let your dog just be themselves. The best moments will be the candid ones, a little nose nuzzle, playful cuddles, or them looking up at you like you are their whole world. Bring a few treats or a favourite toy to grab their attention when needed, and make sure someone is nearby to help hold leads or step in between shots. We usually suggest taking them off separately for portraits right after the ceremony so they are free to go off and play after a few snaps.

TIMING
Timing is everything when you are including your dog in your wedding day. We usually suggest having them there for the ceremony and a few of portraits, then let them head home before the reception kicks off. Weddings can be long and overwhelming with noise, crowds and music, so keeping their appearance short and sweet helps everyone stay relaxed. Plan their grand entrance close to when they are actually needed, have a designated “puppy assistant” ready to go, make sure they have had a walk beforehand, and have the puppy assistant ready to take them home once their visit is done. It keeps the day smooth for you, comfortable for them and just really limits the stress.
